4 out of 5 stars Excellent Basic Kettle   April 22, 2010
Thomas J. Hart (Bethesda, MD, US)
It's good looking and complements the look of our stainless steel appliances. It's heavy enough so that it won't burn up too easily. In other words, it works; not much more to be said.

1 out of 5 stars Melting Pot   April 19, 2010
David Thompson (SF, USA)
It took exactly 1 use to melt the cheap plastic pouring cap/ whistle. With a metal pouring cap, this would be five stars as it looks good and fills well. It just struggles with with temps required to boil water.

4 out of 5 stars still going strong after 9 years   April 8, 2010

I got this kettle via E-Bay about 9 years ago. It still works well. I opened the lid the other day (a rarity because I usually fill it through the spout) and found rust deposited on the bottom. Filled the kettle with water, about 3 Tbsp of baking soda, and 2 Tbsp of lemon juice, and then let it boil for about 1/2hour. The rust is totally gone and the kettle looks good as new. I think the instructions say not to let water sit in the kettle for long periods to prevent rust, but that seems ridiculous. I also use Bartender's Friend on the outside to keep it shiny (I have the polished stainless version). I didn't realize how well-made this kettle is until I started looking for a new one (before figuring out how to get rid of the rust). There is a rubber gasket around the very solid lid that keeps steam from escaping through the lid (unless the kettle is overfilled - then water and steam spurt out through the lid). It's possible to take the lid off while the kettle is hot because it is heatproof plastic. The handle always stays cool. It is easy to fill the kettle through the spout - it takes a bit of practice to get the angle just right, but it becomes automatic after that. The whistle is a loud low hum that I've come to prefer over more shrill traditional whistles. The whistle mechanism is heavy and sturdy - other kettles with lighter whistles don't work as well because steam escapes around the whistling mechanism rather than through it. Guests do find the kettle tricky to pour at first. After looking around I might eventually get the enameled version of this kettle (it comes in orange!) to get rid of the rust issue, but I'll stick with this brand and model.

3 out of 5 stars Not sure I'd buy again   April 5, 2010

We wanted a kettle that wouldn't burn our hands everytime we used it, as our old Chantal kettle did. Well, this Oxo accomplished that, but when they say use over medium heat, they mean it. When the kettle sat on our gas range with the heat slightly higher than medium, the plastic around the whistle mechanism melted. This is not what I expected from a $50.00 kettle. Also the whistle is so high pitched it has all the charm of stone scratched over slate. Don't know if I would buy this again.

2 out of 5 stars Plastic spout cover melted   March 6, 2010
Connie Sue (Seattle, Washington)
This kettle works great but after two years of use the plastic spout cover has bubbled and melted from the heat. Who knows what icky plastic vapors I have inhaled in my kitchen...and I really have to wonder why they put plastic in an area subject to so much heat! The kettle has also become stained and messy looking, but that's probably my fault for not scrubbing and polishing it every day.

Because of the otherwise great functional design, I would buy another one of these *IF AND ONLY IF* it had an all-stainless spout cover.
