garbage February 20, 2010 purple sky (ohio) I BOUGHT THIS POT BASED ON OTHER HAMILTON BEECH PRODUCTS I HAVE HAD IN THE PAST. I GOT THIS THING OUT OF THE BOX AND COULDN'T , OPENED THE TOP, PUT WATER IN IT AND THE TOP WOULDN'T STAY CLOSED. WHEN IT FINALLY CLOSED IT TOOK FOREVER TO BRING THE WATER TO A BOIL. IT WOULD CONTINUE TO BOIL WHEN THE LID WAS OPEN. I HAD THIS THING FOR ABOUT A WEEK AND A HALF BEFORE BOILING WATER POURED FROM THE BASE. THAT WAS THE END OF THAT. I BOUGHT A T FAL WHICH WORKS GREAT AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH IT AT ALL.
You Get What You Pay For February 11, 2010 David (CA) Bought this at a warehouse store and while the price was great, the design is awful when you analyze it.
(-) The unit is quick to boil but boils on full boil markedly longer than my Krups unit. Will this be a problem in the future?...
(-) The scale filter (which pops off too easily int the water!!), measure meter inside and lid is also plastic. If you have health concerns on "Made in Chine" plastics (as MANY kettle consumers do!), this stainless steel/plastic hybrid is not for you.
(-) The flimsy lid is too small so you can't clean it easily.
(-) The steel is uninsulated so you'll BURN your hand quite easily if you touch it.
(-) The teeny little dot of a light failed after Day 1.
(-) The bottom base is flimsy and doesn't secure the unit too well.
(-) The springy lid pops back open with force so hot water can scald you if you aren't paying attention.
For the price I paid for it, I can't complain, but I'm returning it as it's not soundly designed compared to my old soundly designed German Krups kettle.
If you're a college student with little dough, maybe you can live with its shortcomings but the plastic stuff touching the water in one way or another leads me to search elsewhere.
its not plastic February 11, 2010 Bryan Killeen (usa) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
in side the kettle where the water is boiled is all metal.there is a small amount of plastic where the water comes out.most kettles have plastic in contact with the boiling water this one does not.its not the fastest kettle, but it works.the auto shut off works fine and the water does not taste like plastic.i had purchased the andrew weil kettle prior to this one and it was all plastic.it boiled water very fast but was over priced plastic junk that fell apart before i could throw it out...the hamilton beach kettle is a keeper and it was cheaper.
Decent kettle, can boil less than the minimum just fine. February 9, 2010 Robin Miller (Manhattan, NYC) I've had this for about a week now, so I can't say anything about longevity, but I just wanted to point out that you can boil less than the minimum amount of water, and it seems to work fine. The heating element is on the bottom, which is flat, so as long as you have enough water to cover the entire bottom it should be OK. I've been boiling as little as one cup at a time (my morning routine), and it boils quickly and shuts off automatically as usual. No signs of overheating or malfunction from doing this, that I can detect.
Also, to the people complaining that the top flicks hot water on them when they open it while the kettle is hot... just put a finger on the lid when you release it, so it doesn't flick back at you! Not so hard.. :)
Almost perfect kettle February 7, 2010 P. Price (NYC, NY) The kettle works well. It is also beautiful. I've been really happy with the purchase. But I can't give it five stars. Why?
The opening at the top is a little small, and the way it's tilted I can't quite manage to fit the kettle under my kitchen sink faucet to fill. Given that I don't have a 'vegetable sprayer' I fill a tall glass of water and then pour the water into the kettle. That works well enough, and since I'm happy with the kettle otherwise, I don't hesitate to recommend it.
Yet I've owned it for little more than a month and I'm replacing it. You see, just this evening, my darling daughter learned exactly _why_ you don't heat _milk_ in an electric kettle. There is now a film of caramelized milk on the heating element. If not for that small awkward opening, I might have tried to scrub the caramelized milk from the heating element. It may have been a lost cause, in any case, but, since I can't fit my hand into the kettle (small opening) I didn't even try.
