Tea Kettle leaks within 6-9 months June 22, 2010 Janet Maley My first cordless tea kettles were the Black & Decker JKC650. My first one started leaking water at the bottom within 9 months. Contacted warranty support, had to send in a check for $7.50 and also the electric plug. Received 2nd one and within less than 6 months, this one started leaking same place. We have be very careful to not overfill, just seems like defective design. This time I'll send in just the electric plug and upon receipt of that, will receive a refund of my purchase price. Will not get a Black & Decker cordless tea kettle again. In Black & Decker's defense, their customer service was great, just not worth the hassle of doing without a tea kettle for a couple of weeks time and also the additional expense involved of mailing in electric plugs for replacement/refund.
Not a practical design April 29, 2010 VickyLostInNM (NM, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The electric kettle is probably what I use more often in my kitchen. For cooking (often needs a full kettle), for tea (minimal level of water), cleaning, etc. I've bought this one (9 months ago) because I had no other choice in my local Bed Bath and Beyond. From the beginning I never liked the design:
- it is very difficult to visualise the water level as it is "hidden" behind the handle. Also it uses a little ball to show at what level the water is. You need to tilt the kettle to see it as in low levels of water it gets stuck
- the on/off led is almost invisible during daylight
- the lid opens at a closed angle and not at 90o or more, as it would be more practical. Even better if it were removable. We live in a very hard water area, so we ought to use a water filter to fill in the kettle and I can only do that holding both over the sink. Not practical at all.
- it takes too long to boil. Very annoying.
Good points about this kettle:
- it does not leak if overfilled. And I do it a lot. This is the largest size available, even in the UK.
- concealed heating element
- detachable from the base, cordless
- stainless steel
- it works
Next time I visit my mother I'll take this to her as her main use is for making pasta (what means a full kettle) and her water is very good, not hard.
Pity I couldn't bring my kettle from London due to wattage difference. Now Amazon research is my only hope to find a decent one for my needs.
On/Off Switch is plastic and broke in 18 months April 23, 2010 jack (Oakton, VA.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Like the other reviewers, I liked the Kettle, and the way it operated to automatically shut off the power when the water was hot. This Kettle had a stainless steel body, but the essential operating parts are brittle plastic. The lid broke in a popped open position - it would not close - after a year, even though we never opened it. We always filled it up through the pouring spout. So we put tape over it, and believe it or not, the tape held it for months. Then after 18 months, the plastic on/off switch broke. There is the smallest little bitty tab on the end of that switch that broke, making the kettle useless. We only used it once a day, so it wasn't like it was getting heavy duty use. Typical made in China engineering. Since it's still in the 2 year warranty, I hope to get an operable replacement, but if I don't, I'll let you know.
This is not a good enough kettle February 28, 2010 Michael Lieber (Santa Monica, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this for work. It is difficult to tell if it is "on" as the indicator on the handle is dim. The sides get hot. The lid doesn't open all the way. It even seems to come to a boil slowly.
Perhaps I am spoiled since I have been using the Braun for over 2 years at home. what a pleasure. There is no need to buy the Black & Decker when others are so much better.
