Hot pot with best features February 25, 2010 A. Ferreira (Kentucky, USA) I did a lot of research to find the best electric kettle and was rather surprised to find that Hamilton Beach had the best one. Some of the "high-end" pots had rather disappointing reviews. My primary criteria were stainless steel construction, reasonable cost, not having a taste to the water, attractive design, cordless, and large enough to meet my needs.
PROS:
-It's all stainless steel, except for the lid, but the lid does not touch the water. This is one of the few pots I could find that had no plastic touching the water.
-Boils water quickly, takes about 4-5 mins for the full pot to boil.
-Insulated, so the exterior of the pot stays cool to touch.
-Seamless stainless steel--nothing to rust, corrode, or hinder cleaning.
-No "taste" to the water. (you can't believe how many electric pots have this complaint)
-The lid tips up vertically without coming out of the pot, which allows me to fill it from my refrigerator's filtered water dispenser without removing the lid
-Cordless, of course.
-The lid does remove for cleaning, and it's just a tiny learning curve to get the hang of reinserting the lid, but once you do it, you don't forget.
-Holds about 1.7 quarts of water, plenty for my needs.
-Because the pot is insulated, the water stays hot for quite a while.
-Attractive design.
CONS:
-Because it's all stainless, there is no water level indicator on the side of the pot, so you don't know how much water is in the pot, you have to look inside. There is a fill mark inside the pot that I had no trouble seeing. When the lid flips up vertically (per the handy button at the top of the handle), the bottom edge of the lid is just about at the high-water mark, so I can still fill it from my refrigerator dispenser without wondering how full it is.
-The pot won't turn off automatically at the end of the boiling unless the lid is on properly. This is a feature, and it's not hard to accommodate.
-The water gets really hot with much steam at the end of boiling, and you MUST be careful not to position your hand right at the top of the handle, otherwise steam can hit your hand when you pour the water.
COMMENTS: It took me about 5 minutes to figure out how to put the lid on properly and after that it was a breeze. I really like the feature where the lid tips up with a push button, without having to remove it when you fill the pot. There is no noise when the water first heats, and no significant noise until it gets close to boiling. I am so far very pleased with this pot and the design is rather sleek. I'd definitely buy this pot again if I had it all to do over.
Another positive review... February 18, 2010 Walter Mcneil (Houston, TX, US) We've been using this kettle daily for well over a year and like many others, I have nothing but good things to say.
--Graceful lines, looks great on the countertop.
--Seamless stainless steel inside and out with no plastic immersed in boiling water.
--Smooth interior and flat bottom with no exposed heating element.
--Boils water fast and shuts off right at a rolling boil.
--Extra cord coils neatly inside a groove in the base.
--Not outrageously expensive (especially compared to other nice looking kettles, cheap ones are generally UGLY).
If I had to find something to criticize... here are some things that others might find to be shortcomings:
-- Water capacity is not as great as the kettle's size would suggest. Not a problem for me, but the "max" line is just about 2/3 full. When they say "8 cup" I think they are measuring cups like coffee makers. It'll fill an 8-cup french press with several ounces of water to spare- just enough hot water left over to pre-heat your thermos or make a bowl of instant oatmeal!
--Not particularly good for heating liquids other than water. I used it to heat chicken stock a few days ago, didn't watch it closely and it boiled over something fierce. The overflowing stock went down the steam vent behind the handle and soaked the base. Not fun to clean up. I'm not sure any other kettle would have been a whole lot better in this respect...
--Base contacts wear after a while. I sometimes have to rotate the kettle on the base to get it to make contact. Been doing it for months and does not seem to get better or worse.
Happy Hot Pot Mama February 15, 2010 Karen Fleischer (East Bay Area) I bought this electric kettle for my mom. She is really hard to please. I read the many reviews and looked at other brands and models before choosing. I alerted Mom about the complaints in the Amazon unfavorable Hamilton Beach 40898 Cool-Touch Cordless 8 cup Electric Kettle reviews. She has not had a problem with the pot dribbling while pouring or being unstable on the base. Every time I see her she tells me how happy she is with this kettle. She uses it for brewing coffee and tea daily. She loves it. She finds the eight cup capacity adequate and likes the shape/size for sparing room on her limited kitchen countertop. I am getting one for myself as soon as I can!
Actually stainless steel(plastic is not touching the water anywhere) February 13, 2010 Chudilo (Brooklyn, NY USA) I was looking for an electric all-stainless steel Teapot/kettle because boiling water in plastic just doesn't feel right. Even if no significant amount of chemicals can be detected in an individual cup, I am still concerned that in the long run there out to be something.
In addition to being all metal on the inside (all surfaces that ever come in contact with water) this kettle is also double layered. In other words this is basically a thermos with a heating element on the bottom. I didn't think much of it when I bought it, but as turns out it is the feature that makes it so great. First and foremost, the surface of the pot does not get hot enough to scald. Second the water in it stays hot for much longer then in an ordinary teapot.
I'm giving 4 stars because the top is a bit strange. It basically swings in the center on a couple of spring loaded nubbins that tick out from the walls. It's a bit awkward. I think it have been much easier if the top just came out, or was fixed to the handle. Also the switch feels a bit too flimsy. These are just a minor issues(I might be just being to picky. This is an excellent product and I'm glad someone felt compelled to make such a product. If the above issues were addressed I wouldn't mind paying a few dollars more for it.
Good product. February 10, 2010 Ireena (Chicago, IL) Love the cool touch exterior. Isn't loud. Boils water quickly. No complaints.
