Product Description
Cuisinart CJK-17BC Cordless Electric Jug Kettle Brushed Stainless Steel - Cuisinart CJK17BC

Amazon.com Review
This attractive brushed stainless-steel electric kettle boils up to 1-3/4 quarts of water for tea, coffee, or instant oatmeal and soups. The 1,500-watt power base heats water quickly and, for safety, automatically shuts off when it reaches a boil. The cordless kettle conveniently lifts off the base to travel to the breakfast table, desk, or wherever tea is being served and has a cool bottom so it can rest on any surface. Unlike many other electric kettles, the heating element on this one is concealed within the jug. This design prevents calcium build-up, which can alter the flavor of hot water. The kettle also has a button that opens the lid with a single touch for easy refilling and an easy-to-read water level indicator. Other perks on this jug include a large, stay-cool handle and a wide lip for pouring. Cuisinart covers this cordless electric jug kettle under a 3-year warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Product   April 3, 2010
B. Conolly (Cayman Islands)
The first kettle I bought would not automatically shut off. It eventually melted the base. The replacement kettle has now developed a leak around the fill indicator. I would recommend NOT purchasing this kettle. I am off to buy another brand this morning. I have been a supporter of Cuisinart for 25 years due to their quality and designs however this is probably my last purchase from them.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy from Cuisinart   March 13, 2010
Exremely Dissatisfied (New York)
I had one of these. It died completely in 3 months. Cuisinart charged $10 shipping and handling, saying they would replaced. However, for the next 3 months, they kept telling me it was on "back order." It turns out that this model has been discontinued. I just called Cuisinart asking why they told me this has been discontinuied when Amazon is selling them - the answer was that Amazon must have bought a lot before they were discontinued, but they have in fact been discontinued. So don't waste your time buying this. Electric kettles are great, but this one is a very flawed product that Cuisinart won't stand behind. I feel sorry for the person whose review says they bought it in reliance on the 3-year warranty. I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM CUISINART AGIN.

1 out of 5 stars $30 per month - so not worth it   January 30, 2010
Marc D. Donner (New York, New York USA)
Our old electric kettle, after about six years of daily service, stopped functioning. My wife and I did some research and settled on this one, partly because of its size, appearance, and the Cuisinart reputation. On November 12 of 2009 we ordered one through Amazon. Today, 30 January 2010, it ceased functioning. When I turn it on the little indicator light turns on for about ten or twenty seconds, then it turns off. It seems that the thermostat has malfunctioned.

It's interesting how this disappointment has affected us. We're not going to try yet another electric kettle - we're going to go back to a stovetop kettle.

3 out of 5 stars Jekyll & Hyde on this kettle   January 1, 2010
C. Bismuth (Water World, USA)
It seems absolutely purr-fect. And when it works properly, it is! We've had our first one for about 5 years without ANY major problems. Some comments on the reviews of others:

01> It is a wee bit noisy when it boils, but come on! It is boiling water in a small, confined space.

02> It WILL boil dry if you don't manage to get the lid closed properly, so make sure that you do.

03> True reports that the outside of the kettle stays cool.

PROS:

Love that it is all stainless interior with a hidden heating element!

Easy clean once every couple of months: fill the kettle with filtered water, add a couple of tablespoons of lemon juice (bottled is fine) and a tablespoon of baking soda. Boil, watch closely that it doesn't boil over. Empty, rinse, return to service.

Love that it turns itself off after boiling. Yeah, I'm the chick who boiled the kettle dry in the CEOs kitchen all those years ago.

Love that it is cordless.

Love that it has a small footprint.

Love that it is almost 2 qts in volume.

CONS:

The catch on the lid that connects to the release button is small and plastic of a sort that is not particularly durable. Sooner or later, this catch dries up and breaks off. You can still use the kettle if you rig a way to keep it closed during boiling. We placed a rolled up potholder on top of the catch. HOWEVER, when you pour the hot liquid out and the lid flaps open, the steam will scald your pouring hand. Proceed with caution and use two hands to make sure the lid remains closed during the pour. THE COMPANY SHOULD MAKE REPLACEMENT LIDS AVAILABLE AT MINIMUM COST, SINCE WE PAID A PREMIUM TO OWN THEIR PRODUCT.

ALSO, FOR THE PRICE OF THE KETTLE IT REALLY SHOULD LAST LONGER THAN A FEW YEARS. THAT ONE TINY PLASTIC CATCH IS THE REAL ACHILLES HEEL TO AN OTHERWISE STELLAR PRODUCT.

Seems most of the reviewers on this product had bad experiences. I surmise it is harder to get folks to write about a good experience, especially with a staple item like a tea kettle.

For us, it is a perfect solution with a minor flaw. Hope Cuisinart will fix that part.

We had this kettle for quite a while, let say 6 months. We were fairly pleased with it as it did what we expected. Boiled water for tea. Anyhow, the kettle began shutting off before the water came to a boil. Then one day, as my husband plugged the kettle in, sparks flew out of the base of the kettle, where the electric cord comes out. In the garbage this Cuisinart product went.
