Amazon.com Review For tea, instant coffee, or hot chocolate, this cordless, 1,500-watt electric kettle brings 1-1/3 quarts of water to a boil faster than a microwave. The kettle is made of stainless steel polished to a mirror finish. To provide 360-degree access, the kettle fits onto the power base in any position and swivels for easy liftoff. The heating element in the base never touches water, so there will be no mineral buildup on it. The roomy handle stays cool, the cord wraps on the base's underside, and rubber feet on the base resist slipping. For safety, the kettle shuts off automatically when water boils or if the kettle runs dry. The kettle stands 8 inches high on its power base and carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

I have had this teakettle for over 12 years.... August 26, 2010 emteegee (Boston) I've had this kettle for a long time. I use it daily and love it. I chose it because it was attractive - an electric teakettle is going to sit on the counter so it needs to look good. (After 12 years it is still shiny and new looking!) I like the fact the the kettle itself does not have any plastic that comes in contact with the boiling water and steam. It lifts off the base so it is not difficult to travel around the kitchen and dining room with it. It shuts off after it boils, no annoying whistle and no forgotten kettle on the stove. It boils quickly. Alas, the pull ring on the top broke and it rendered the unit useless. I didn't toss it though, I was hoping to fix it. I finally got around to calling the manufacturer and to my delight they are sending free of charge a replacement top. I'll probably get another 12 years out of this kettle! Interestingly they asked me if the kettle was made in Germany or China. After reading other reviews I'm wondering if the 5 star happy people are owners of the models made in Germany....
Liked it enough to replace it when it finally failed August 23, 2010 J. White (San Diego, California, USA) I bought a Chef's Choice International 685 Electric Kettle in around 2003, and have used it two or three times every day for the last seven years.
Here's what I liked about it:
(a) Easy to fill via wide spout without needing to take lid off (and so also avoid scalding hands if kettle is already hot).
(b) Side handle makes it easy to pour when pointing spout downwards.
(c) Polished stainless steel is easy to clean and stays looking brand new for years.
(d) Boils water fast.
Here are a few minor (to me) disadvantages:
(a) Lid is a bit stiff and awkward to remove (so I fill by spout instead).
(b) Handle on lid is a bit flimsy and might not last well (but I rarely use it, see above).
(c) Side handle makes it a bit strenuous to fill when pointing spout upwards (can't have weak hands, or must rest kettle on a surface).
(d) After seven years heavy use, the handle started to come loose, the plastic holding a screw in place gave way (Fixed in 2010 model, see below).
I've just been to the Mall and looked at what else is on the market, and decided to buy exactly the same Chef's Choice model again.
For comparison, around 2001 or 2002 I bought a Cuisinart (KUA-17 Electric Kettle), but the Cuisinart failed after only about 18 months. See also my review of that.
Update on 4th September 2010: I just bought a replacement Chef's Choice 685. The handle is now attached by metal nut and metal bolt, so earlier problem with plastic breaking in 2003 model appears to be fixed.
yes, it has plastic inside and a chemical smell July 21, 2010 K. Walker (Idaho) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
There is a piece of plastic inside the kettle. I bought it thinking it was all steel inside. I saw the reviews mentioning the chemical smell but it had a good rating so I ordered anyway. Now, after having in my house 12 hours, I'm returning it because the smell is overwhelming and flavors the water with a chemical/plastic taste. I don't understand the good ratings.
No Plastic (Almost) May 24, 2010 Don 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My first kettle lasted almost 10 years (an original 1800 Watt Russel Hobbs). When it died I was amazed that nearly all the kettles out there have plastic in the boiling water. Are they crazy? I do not want chemicals leaking into my tea water. This kettle has a max water indicator that is plastic and it is above the water level (unless you over fill it). I wish it had no plastic on the inside but this is the best I could find. I have used it several times a day for over 3 months and it still works great (as it should). I hope it lasts longer than some are experiencing. When is someone going to make a high power (1800 Watt min), quality Kettle with no plastic parts on the inside? Ill buy it even at triple the cost.
We have the same Chef's Choice kettle since 1999... May 21, 2010 Yours Truly 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Its gotten to be like a pet in our house.
Not to say that it hasn't had trouble.
First time when the heating element went out, after about five years of heavy use,
I found that the company which imports these would repair it for 25 bucks, return shipping included. It was returned promptly, repaired and polished. About another five years went by and the element went out again. I called the company again. They said to send it in and they'd give me a repair estimate. I sent it in and was waiting for a phone call with the estimate when the kettle showed up back at our door, repaired and polished again. I called to inquire and found that the heater element which had been installed in the first repair was still under warranty. No charge to me.
Unbelievable customer care and service in today's day and age.
I had to send them a thank you card.
Kettle works great. Rare and refreshing customer care. Highly recommended.
